While the Delhi Premier League (DPL) has followed the Indian Premier League (IPL) pattern, there are still a few differences that have been kept largely due to lack of experience among match officials.

In the IPL and international white-ball games, the stumps are considered broken the moment the LED lights on the stumps or bails flash/blink. However, in the DPL, the norms with regards to breaking of stumps are just as followed in red ball cricket.

“The stumps will be considered broken only after both the spigots of a bail are removed from the stumps. It is as if there are no LED lights. The LED lights are there only to add some colour to viewing. Since the stumps in DPL games don’t have LED lights and only bails have them, it was deemed important to consider stumps broken in the traditional way, that is, when both the spigots are removed,” said an official.

Also, when a referral is made to the third umpire, the interaction over the decision between the third umpire and on-field umpire will not be heard by the players or the viewers.

“There is only one umpire, Gayathri Venugopalan, who has experience of officiating in matches broadcast live. No other DDCA umpire here has that kind of experience. That is why the decision has been taken to avoid any unsavoury incident,” said the official.

It should be noted Delhi’s biggest name in umpiring Anil Chaudhary, who is part of the International Cricket Council (ICC) panel, is not part of the league as he will be busy with the UP T20 League. There are murmurs within the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) that he wasn’t happy with certain aspects of the ongoing league.

Jersey numbers are mandatory for cricketers and the player will have to wear only the number that has been allotted to him.

“A player cannot wear another player’s jersey. That is because these players are young and the viewers need to recognize them. They cannot confuse viewers by wearing another one’s jersey,” said the official.
